These wagons, capable of carrying 70 tons of load each, were unveiled during an inauguration ceremony at the Cantt Railway Station in Lahore.
The modern design of these locally manufactured wagons enables efficient transport of containers, contributing to the enhancement of the country’s freight transportation capabilities. Pakistan Railways’ Chief Executive Officer, Amir Ali Baloch, emphasized the importance of local manufacturing, stating that it is a major step towards self-reliance.
The statement from Pakistan Railways also mentioned that these wagons will allow freight trains to run at a speed of 100 km per hour. The department plans to induct 820 such coaches into the railway system by the end of the financial year 2025-26.
Local manufacturing of these wagons is expected to save foreign exchange reserves and boost income by over Rs 9 billion annually, according to the statement. A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways highlighted that the department has developed freight wagons that meet international standards, showcasing the country’s capability in the railway sector.
