Hafeez claimed that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) struck a deal with the two players to entice them back into the national team.
In a recent TV interview, Hafeez stated, “Six months ago, when the PCB approached these two cricketers to play for Pakistan, they declined as they were focused on participating in T20 leagues. Now, with no leagues scheduled during the June window, they are back for the T20 World Cup, treating it as just another league.”
Hafeez’s comments have sparked a debate regarding the selection process in Pakistan cricket. He emphasized the need for the PCB to prioritize domestic performers who consistently excel and show dedication and skill in first-class cricket.
During his tenure overseeing domestic cricket, Hafeez noted that players like Kamran Ghulam were discouraged. Despite his talent, Ghulam chose to pursue opportunities in league cricket abroad, feeling that scoring hundreds in domestic cricket wouldn’t lead to international selection based on his performances alone.
Hafeez criticized the current PCB approach led by Mohsin Naqvi, suggesting it undermines the development of homegrown talent. His remarks suggest a need for the PCB to reevaluate its strategy to ensure that committed domestic players are given the opportunities they deserve, ultimately fostering a more sustainable pool of national cricketers.
Pakistan faced a defeat against arch-rivals India in their second T20 World Cup match, losing by 6 runs at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium. This loss has drawn significant scrutiny from the media and experts alike.
