The filing to drop the case, submitted without explanation, came just before the court was scheduled to hear OpenAI’s bid to have the case dismissed. Musk’s lawyers requested the dismissal “without prejudice,” leaving open the possibility of reactivating the case in the future.
The lawsuit, filed in February of this year, alleged that OpenAI had shifted its focus to profit-making instead of its initial altruistic goals. OpenAI responded by pointing out Musk’s previous support for a for-profit structure and his suggestion of a merger with Tesla, his electric car company.
The dispute escalated recently when Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to enhance its Siri voice assistant and operating systems with OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. Musk criticized the partnership on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), suggesting that Apple was unaware of the implications of sharing data with OpenAI.
Despite Musk’s criticism, Apple’s stock market value reached a record high above $3 trillion following the announcement.
In July 2023, Musk launched his own AI company, xAI, with a focus on “understanding reality.” In November of the same year, xAI introduced Grok, a chatbot with a humorous touch, to compete with products like ChatGPT.
