PCB to Retain Babar Azam as Captain After T20 World Cup 2024

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to retain Babar Azam as the national team's white-ball captain following the T20 World Cup 2024, despite the team's poor performance in the ongoing tournament, sources told Geo News on Thursday.

However, the PCB is likely to make some changes within the team. This decision follows the national side’s two losses in the World Cup, including defeats against the United States and arch-rivals India on June 9. The team also struggled in their match against Canada on June 11, managing to chase down a modest 107-run target in 17.3 overs.

With these setbacks, Pakistan faces the risk of an early exit from the tournament, as their progression to the Super 8 stage now depends on the outcomes of other teams’ matches.

The PCB’s decision to continue with Babar Azam as captain comes after Chairman Mohsin Naqvi urged the nation to support the cricket team during the T20 World Cup 2024, stepping back from his earlier critical stance. Speaking to Geo News, Naqvi emphasized the ongoing consultation and refrained from discussing the matter further at this stage.

Earlier in the week, Naqvi had expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance, particularly after their loss to India, suggesting that the team needed significant changes. “It seemed that a minor surgery would work but after this bad performance, I’m now sure that a major surgery is required. The nation will soon see a major overhaul,” he stated.
