Mumbai doctor swindled out of INR 700,000 through deepfake video impersonating Mukesh Ambani

A doctor in Mumbai lost INR 700,000 to fraudsters who used a deepfake video featuring India's wealthiest man, Mukesh Ambani, to deceive her.

The victim, KH Patil, a 54-year-old Ayurvedic practitioner, was scammed after watching the video on Instagram.

According to her statement, the video showed Ambani endorsing a trading company called Rajiv Sharma Trade Group, which he claimed was highly successful. He encouraged viewers to join BCF Academy to achieve high investment returns.

Patil conducted online research and found credible information about the company, including offices in London and Bandra Kurla, which convinced her of its authenticity.

Subsequently, Patil contacted the company online and invested a total of INR 710,000 between May and June.

In her first information report (FIR), the doctor mentioned that the company provided her with an account to track her investments, enhancing the business’s legitimacy.

The online portal indicated she had earned a profit of INR 3 million.

However, when Patil attempted to withdraw the funds, she was unsuccessful. Realizing she had been scammed, she promptly filed a complaint with the police.

The case has been registered, and the police are investigating it in collaboration with the bank.

This incident is not isolated, as earlier, a deepfake video of actor Scarlett Johansson had also gone viral.
